Commoditization = Super cheap but stale smartphones. Would you want that?

I never pay 1500 for a flagship. I would buy 2 year old model for 400, at the most. And of course, Samsung is the only thing worth paying for. Samsung is the Korean Toshiba. I don't think we will see similar from China because they have a different business model. I don't doubt that anyone can be as good as Samsung, they just don't want to.

What do you mean by stale ?
As smartphones are getting cheaper, you're getting close to cutting edge specs at a lower price point, and as long as you can get close to high end hardware, the software possibilities are endless with rooting and custom ROMS, so i don't really think staleness would be an issue at all.
Yes of course i'd want a cheap smartphone that can do as much if not more than a more expensive one, who wouldn't ?

@Nicholas Orr ... OK thanks for the reply. I own the S9 and S9+, haven't noticed the selfies are blurry... BUT then again I don't use any of the built in effects or filters... SO it could be the issue of photos with too much post editing that you are being exposed to. The one that comes to mind is "Live Focus" where the phone is trying to give your background an artificial Bokeh to it.

@MasterMech77 I'm referring to the actual photos, Samsung selfies are blurry, it's obvious to me in any of the comparison videos where they 1:1 images are compared.

Want me to buy a new smatphone? sell me something with a built in adblocker that Works, a phone that auto rejects telemarketing calls and texts, that has an intelligent volume app, that i can use hands free, and when i reply to a text -make the reply go to the person that just texted me not the last person i texted. start with that and you can have all my money.

After 10 years, smartphone market have finally reached it saturation point, what do you expect. There wont be another smartphone revolution unless something radically new, maybe "affordable foldables"?

the fingerprinter reader is in the display, once the front facing camera goes under the display, that's it. Just 5G and the phones will stop being innovative.

paying $1000 for a phone is moronic unless you have extra cash to burn and it doesn't effect you. otherwise a mid level phone is just better..

I bought my only smartphone just 2 yrs ago that came with 1000 prepaid minutes from TM for just $110 to be used as an emergency phone during a 2-month long trip to LV... it's an LG with earphone jack, microSD slot, plus replaceable battery! Don't care much for the camera function, personally 😯
Compare to all these overpriced new models nowadays, I'm just going to buy additional batteries which are going for $7-8 brand new & stick it out as long as I can/need to!!

It's just insane to buy a new phone ever year or every other year rly. I have my S7 since it first came out and I remember it being one of the best phones with amazing camera etc etc and now everything is as you said better but similar. The "normal" ppl who are not rich would just go buy phones for fun.
I rly hate how companies design their phones to die after 2-3 years and make you buy a new one. With this problem I don't see why I should go out and buy a 800-1000 Dollar device and spend that money again after a few years.
Yes we all do use our phones dayly but I do have an attachment to my phone and would love to use it for 5 years and then buy a new one..

I think phone companies should put out top tier stuff every 3-4 years, and test stuff that will be added to them in less expensive budget phones. Before the whole high screen to body ratio obsession everyone is expecting in good phones now, phones were in a spot where for a couple years they didn't have too much new stuff but what they already had was perfected. So what if they put out budget phones with the new testy features, sort of like beta flagships? There could be different tiers of beta flagships too, ones that focus on certain features an some that have more than one. Then when things are perfected, they'll unleash them onto their big expensive phones in one big package with every feature flushed out. People would buy the flagship ones because new and perfect features, and by 3-4 years they'll probably be looking for something new anyways. (I know some people perfectly happy with phones 4 years old, just starting to think about switching because they have no reason to upgrade if their current ones still do what they need done) Also, people with maybe lower incomes would buy the beta phones for their cheap prices and new and excited (yet unpredictable) features.

True! some of us dont have the money to buy expensive ass phones. i used to buy iphones, then i went to samsung android, now i went to xiaomi. The only way i could buy them was on installments. we would have to deal with stupid carriers until we paid our phone off. Iphone and samsungs are too expensive. i "downgraded" to a xiaomi redmi note 6 pro. it does everything i want a phone to do and it WAYYYY cheaper than samsung.

i went from an iphone 4 that cost $500 to a galaxy s5 ($650) to a galaxy s7 ($700). i was going to upgrade to the s9 ($800) or s10 ($1000) but..... i got tired of paying exorbitant prices for phones that become slow within a year or two. these phones are nice and all but i dont need half the features they have.

I then made the decision to look into the used market. i looked at galaxys and iphones, they were still expensive. i also know that they get slow over time. i decided to look for cheaper new phones. the market here in the US sucks.

i started to look into chinese phones. i found that chinese phones had the features that i wanted at a wayyyy lower price. I ended up getting the xiaomi redmi note 6 pro for $180.... one fucking eighty!!! and it does everything i want it to do. it even has a better battery life than my brothers s8+

The interaction hasn’t changed with the os and hardware. I’m doing the same thing on my devices as I was years ago. With my iPhone XS Max I see no reason to upgrade for a few years unless Apple intentionally slows the phone down but its a lag free experience with a high-res screen and great camera more than I could ever need so unless phones change a lot most users including myself will stay with a phone for longer and longer. Hardware is getting better but for the average user that extra camera fidelity won’t matter or the new A blah blah chip that benchmarks higher

I would not use a Huawei phone if it was free, its Chinese, I’m not putting my credit card number in a Chinese phone.

I want the newest phone still, but it is crazy expensive so i dont buy it. huawei has cheap phones that are also good, so that is why they sell many phones.
